Not many of us realize that there’s a whole lot more we could and should be doing for the overall health of our hair. Sometimes, it’s the lack of products, knowledge, and care that inhibits us from getting the Kardashian-worthy hair of our dreams.

So when it comes to taking care of ourselves and our appearance, he most important part of any hair journey is getting to know your own hair. Treat it to some dinner, give it a massage, compliment the way it looks- whatever. But knowing the type of hair you have, what it needs, and what it’s lacking are vital to taking you from zero to hero.

Once you’ve determined your hair type, the areas that need improvement, and the goals you have in mind, here are a few ways in which it help you achieve them.

Adjust your routine based on your hair

Not one person is the same as the other, so obviously, everyone’s hair is different. What someone with curly hair uses is different for someone with straight hair. If you’re lacking volume, you’re probably not gonna use the same products as someone that has too much volume as a result of thick, coarse hair. So make sure that when you’re buying products, you’re not getting something that could potentially make the problem worse. Like, getting an ultra-moisturizing scalp treatment when you have oily glands.

 

Treat yo’self and yo’hair

Come on guys, we see it all the time. People being rough and downright CRUEL to their hair! Imagine if you were your troubled tresses… You’d want some love, too, no?! If you have split ends, cut ’em. Your hair is greasy? Wash it with good shampoo. To dry? A nice treatment will help. There are SO MANY THINGS you can do to nourish and care for your hair. But remember: the key is getting to know your hair. 

Don’t be too harsh with the shampoo

“If you use a shampoo that is strong on greasy hair, you may find that it will strip too much natural oil from your scalp, causing it to release even more and make your hair greasy again,” celebrity hairdresser Stuart Phillips explains. The best thing you can do is get a shampoo that gently removes your natural oils and excess gunk, without stripping your hair of the necessary, healthy oils and grease.

 

Deep condition that baby up

Especially if you color your hair. Wether it’s single colored or highlighted, it’s so so important to treat it with a nice dose of hydration every now and then. This allows your dehydrated hair to drink up all the moisture and nutrients that help keep it nice, strong, and vibrant. Here’s a PIAM Pro Tip for ya: Think you need to leave treatments on for hours for them to take effect? Think again. Phillips advises leaving them on for no more than 15 minutes. He explains, “Some people leave the conditioner on all night thinking by morning their hair will look amazing, but that is a waste of time, as it will stop working after roughly 15 minutes.” Neat, huh? It’s simple, fast, and easy to do. So no excuses!

 

You gotta be strategic

Girls with curls know the woes of the trade- hours spent attempting to maintain and style it, only to become a frizz ball the minute you step out the door And those with finer, straighter hair can’t seem to hold a curl, let alone a style. For curls, the best way to keep it under control is to cut back on how many times you touch it, and the curl creme do the hard work for you (it’s there for a reason) because then all the product that’s supposed to help you hair, just ends up in your hands, instead. Same goes for fine hair.
